Cash Drawer Compatibility Decision Tree PDF Print E-mail
Written by Gary Swart
Wednesday, 17 March 2010
So, you have a cash drawer from an undetermined source and you just bought an Epson Compatible POS-X XR510 receipt printer.  Will the Cash Drawer work with POSitive Software products?  Here's the information you need to decide.

1.       Your Receipt Printer is an EPSON Compatible and it includes a Cash Drawer Interface (Looks like a phone jack – but its NOT a phone jack… do not attempt to use a phone cable as damage to the printer and/or drawer may occur and Warranty doesn’t cover this damage)

2.        Do you know if the drawer is

a.       STAR compatible

b.      EPSON compatible

c.       Direct Connect (Serial)

d.      USB (Its unlikely you would have USB Drawer but a few do exist)

e.      A manual drawer – ie operated only with a key… that will work, but obviously the software doesn’t trigger the drawer to open.

3.       If it is Star or Epson there is a cable and/or plug that looks like a Phone cable/ (or) jack (It isn’t a phone cable (just LOOKS like one) and damage to the drawer and/or Printer can occur if you attempt to use a phone cable as a substitute for a properly wired cable) Unfortunately both Star and Epson use the same exact port type (ie the phone jack) so it can’t be identified as one or the other by looking at the cable/or jack on the drawer.

a.       If it is designed for a STAR receipt printer it won’t work…. Period, your done. It can’t be modified to work.

b.      If it is designed for a EPSON receipt Printer it will work (provided you have the right cable – which I MAY (or May not) be able to provide if you don’t have one. We need to know the brand of the drawer to be sure, and without that we can try a couple of best guess cables – but not a phone cable)

4.       If it is a Direct Connect Drawer then you need a Serial port on your PC.

a.       Most PC’s today do NOT have serial ports they have USB ports – If you add a serial port Interface card to the PC it will work.

b.      You can Not use a Serial to USB converter with a cash drawer and get reliable performance – we have tried many times. It will not work correctly

c.       If you do have a serial port it will work

5.       If you have a USB Drawer it MAY work

a.       We would need the driver and installation instructions

b.      With That we may have success, we may not

6.       Determining if the drawer is Star or Epson Compatible can be done by determining the brand and model and checking the manufacturers web site for compatibility.  Many drawers are generic in the sense that there isn’t always a brand or model.  If you see a sticker “Star” or “EPSON” that would be a gift from heaven.

7.       If there is no brand or model we can hope it is an Epson compatible and set it up as if it is an Epson compatible Drawer. If it works your are golden, if not, I’ll recommend buying a drawer.

ER5200M Cash Register at Baskin Robbins - Nob Hill PDF Print E-mail

I am in the middle of delivering and installing a SAM4s ER5200M Cash Register to my customer Baskin Robbins on Nob Hill Blvd. in Yakima, WA.

Eve, the owner had an aging Essper Register and it finally gave up the ghost.

She considered going to a box store to buy a box store type register.  But that would mean she'd have to figure out how to program it.  She already has a ER5200M register she purchased a couple years ago so it made a lot of sense to stick with what she and her employees are already familiar with.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on the programming tomorrow morning.  We'll spend a little time in the morning showing Eve how to change prices and add employees.

She's a really nice lady and takes great care of her customers - why not stop by and say hello and ask her about her experience with the registers and have an ice cream treat while you're at it?!!

There's a cash register catalog on our web site by the way... Look in the Catalogs Menu.

Testing FloristWare and POS Hardware on a Mac PDF Print E-mail
Written by Gary Swart
Wednesday, 04 February 2009

Well, Here's the project tonight.... This is a note to FloristWare tech Support.  They are good so I think I'll get an answer soon.  If anyone else has any ideas, please post a response!

I have a customer buying a Mac and opening this Monday.  So I have a small window of time in which to test and confirm things will work.  As of right now I can’t give it my stamp of approval.

I installed the files that [were] sent me [by FloristWare] on the Mac tonight and I am getting the following errors:

  • FileMaker cannot share a file because FileMaker network sharing is turned off. (I’m thinking that’s no problem)
  • You are missing the Menu Control Plug-in …… Click ok… then there’s a rapid sequence of error sounds
  • You should only quit Florist ware by clicking the black button… (I’m not trying to quit)
  • The File plug in failed to load. This is a serious problem….
  • You are missing the mailIt plugin….
  • The URL plug-in failed to load…..
  • You are missing an important component that is required in order to process credit card transaction through FloristWare
  • You are missing an important component that is needed to automatically open your cash drawer…

I went ahead and tried testing what I could.  The drawer will open in the Mac Terminal program , but not in FloristWare.

The Star TSP100 receipt printer does print, but if you can imagine it (actually, no need to imagine – click here for a pdf scan with a ruler for scale. Its actually condensing the 8-1/2 x 11 printed page down to a 3-1/8 wide receipt .  The Mac version of FloristWare’s Printer Setup doesn’t have a set up for receipt printers.    When I set up the receipt printer that was the only printer connected to the Mac.  It simply printed the full page format to the receipt printer.  Then I added an ink Jet to the printers and after that I can only print to the Ink jet.  I’ve been told that FileMaker has a keystroke combination that will change printers… I couldn’t figure that out to try that.

Can you help me ASAP to get the missing plugins so I can finalize this test?

Right Now I'm working in a web conference providing technical support for a customer in Kennewick WA.  They are a retail sales organization who ships products all over the world - including all over the state of Washington.

Washington State has a relatively new tax law requirement to charge sales tax based upon the delivery location of the product.  Its called Destination Based Sales Tax.

Our Point Of Sale Software - POSitive Retail Manager by POSitive SOftware Company (www.gopositive.com ) supports destination based Sales Tax - and I am helping them set it up.

Drop me a line if this is something that you might need help with.

Point Of Sale Max Joins Mercury Payment Systems PDF Print E-mail

Point Of Sale Max now offers Mercury Payment Systems Credit card processing to customers using.  I'm excited to be able to offer my merchant customers the added value that Mercury and Point Of Sale Max bring together.  Mercury Payment Systems offers it's dealers as well as it's merchants a web portal that allows important reports and information to be accessed any time.  I like that the dealer portal will notify me that my cutomer is hand entering an unusual number of transactions - an indicator that the merchant's card reader has failed.  It allows me to be pro-active in contacting the merchant to see if there really is a problem.
